Guidance for packaging producers
More than 10 million tonnes of packaging waste is produced in the UK from industry, commerce and households.
Of this, more than six million tonnes of packing waste are accepted for recovery either in the UK or overseas. This is good for the environment and helps the UK meet its recovery and recycling targets. It's also good for business, as those that cut down on waste packaging can save considerable amounts of money.
Find out if you're a packaging producer
If you have an annual turnover of more than £2 million and handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year, you are required to meet the producer obligations under the packaging regulations. You will also have recycling obligations if you own the packaging on which you perform an activity and supply it to someone else or if you import packaging.
These regulations apply to groups of companies. Therefore if you are a holding company or part of a group you may need to comply.

Producer compliance schemes
Packaging compliance schemes are businesses that take on the legal obligations of packaging producers, and are responsible for obtaining evidence of recovery and recycling.

Extended producer responsibility for packaging
Packaging producer responsibility is changing to introduce extended producer responsibility.
If you’re affected by the new extended producer responsibility for packaging you will need to start collecting the correct packaging data in 2023, and may need to start reporting this in October 2023.
