Licence to move and keep an invasive alien species

To move or keep an animal listed as a species of special concern under retained EU regulations in Wales you must apply to Natural Resources Wales for a licence.

There are some exceptions where you will not need to apply for a licence:

Find GOV.UK guidance on the rules for animals of special concern.

If you got the animal after it was listed you must contact Natural Resources Wales for guidance.

How to apply for a licence

Applicants will need to have their premises inspected by a vet and submit the inspection report along with their licence application. A method statement will also need to be included with the application.

Animals must be:

  • cared for and their welfare needs met
  • not be allowed to breed and
  • be securely contained.
  • microchipped or marked using methods that do not cause avoidable pain, distress or suffering.
