River basin management plans 2021-2027: protected area register
A significant number of the water bodies in Wales are designated as protected areas. These areas are important for wildlife conservation, drinking water supply, shellfish harvesting and bathing.
As required by Part 3, 10 of the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017 (WFD Regulations 2017) we maintain a register of protected areas for the Western Wales and Dee River Basin Districts. The Environment Agency maintains the register for the Severn River Basin District.
Every care has been taken to provide the custom Welsh names of protected sites, but this list is not authoritative.
