NRW’s Strategic Steer for Biodiversity to 2022

The loss of biodiversity is something we urgently need to reverse. This theme looks at what is needed at the local scale within Mid Wales to improve the resilience and quality of our ecosystems. Within this theme, we will explore how to better manage habitats to address the balance of biodiversity by improving how they connect. This will help us begin to address the nature emergency in Mid Wales.

This theme aims to explore how we can reverse the decline of biodiversity by building resilient ecological networks.

This cross-cutting theme looks at the state of biodiversity in Wales and the current threats to it. It incorporates key messages from the ecosystem chapters.

We live in a vibrant and biodiverse North East Wales where we reverse the decline in biodiversity, and key species and habitats are valued and understood by its communities.

Routine maintenance activities typically take place annually, subject to economic justification. Our programme is agreed after consultation with our own fisheries, recreation and biodiversity teams. This ensures that the natural environment is maintained and, where possible, improved as a result of our maintenance work.

Habitats and wildlife on ancient woodland sites managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) are benefiting from biodiversity restoration work.

This theme includes ensuring that we all work together to improve ecosystem resilience in the area. We need to reverse the decline, and act to enrich biodiversity. This theme links closely with Vital Nature, NRW's strategic steer for biodiversity.

Mid Wales is the biggest producer of Welsh timber. Forests and woodlands also offer additional benefits for biodiversity, conservation, recreation and well-being.

A pond that failed to hold water for a number of years has been restored in a move that will help boost biodiversity and wildlife populations at Aberderfyn nature reserve in Wrexham.

When natural resources flourish, society, well-being and the economy thrive too. We need to protect and improve the resilience of our ecosystems, enhancing the benefits they provide and preventing the loss of biodiversity.

A sustainable, resilient agricultural food and land management system which supports livelihoods, protects soil and water, maintains and enhances biodiversity whilst also reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly contributes to public good.
