How to prepare a band 1 marine licence application

Apply for a band 1 marine licence if your work:

  • is included on the list of band 1 activities
  • will take less than 12 months
  • will have a total cost of less than £1 million
  • will not be in an area used for military defence or hosting cables or pipelines

How to apply

Before applying for a marine licence, you need to prepare information and documents.

Use the online form to apply, when you have prepared everything.

What information to have ready

You will need to know:

  • your project title
  • a summary of what you want to do
  • applicant and any agent details
  • start date of the works
  • project location using longitude and latitude in decimal degrees to 5 decimal places
  • which materials you will deposit or remove
  • whether you will use any vessels or vehicles
  • reference for any pre-application advice we gave you
  • whether you have any statutory powers to consent aspects of the work, and under which legislation

Public register confidentiality

We publish marine licence applications on our public register.

If you want any part of your application to be confidential, you must explain why. 

We will decide if there is a valid reason to keep the information confidential.

What documents to prepare

All band 1 applications must include:

Work in harbours

If your work is taking place in or around a harbour, you must include:

  • written confirmation from the local harbour authority that your work will not pose a risk to other sea users

Work involving removals

If your work involves any kind of removal or beach management, you must include:

Optional documents

You can include:

  • construction plans and sectional drawings
  • any correspondence with other consultees

How long it takes

You will usually get a decision within six weeks.

The six-week period starts from when we confirm your application is complete. It might not start on the day you submit it, if information is missing or incorrect.

A marine licence will require you to carry out a number of tasks before you are allowed to start work.

These tasks may include:

  • notifying relevant people or organisations
  • submitting additional documents to us
