Safe Speed in Narrow Channels

LOCAL NOTICE NUMBER: No 7 of 2024
VALID FROM: 1 October 2024
EXPIRES: -

Vessels navigating within the Conservancy harbour limits particularly in the narrow Mostyn and Salisbury Channels are reminded of their obligation to maintain a safe navigational watch and proceed at a safe speed appropriate to local circumstances and conditions.

In assessing safe speed, minimum steerage and wake effect need to be considered on a case-by-case basis. While no specific speed limit is imposed, vessels should aim to maintain speeds below 12 knots under normal conditions.

All vessels transiting the narrow approach channels should ensure safe speed is implemented as a key element of the master/vessels passage planning, taking due cognisance of relevant legislation and guidance:

  • Port of Mostyn Local Notice to Mariners 03/2019
  • MGN 315 Keeping a Safe Navigational Watch
  • MGN 379 (amend 1) Use of Electronic Navigational Aids
  • International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) 1972 (as amended). Rule 6 Safe Speed
