Strategic review of charging
Update: 31/03/2023
Our permitting charges will remain at 2022-23 rates until any new charging schemes are agreed.
We will keep our customers updated on timescales for implementation.
Responding to consultation feedback
We held a 12-week public consultation between October 2022 and January 2023, asking people to share their views and comment on our plans to update our charges for some of our permits and licences.
Following a review of the consultation feedback, we’ve agreed several revisions to the proposed charging schemes, which you can view in our consultation response on Citizen Space.
Welsh Government is continuing to undertake the necessary assurance work on the proposals. Advice will then be provided to the Minister and a decision taken thereafter.
Proposal to introduce new charges
We are proposing to introduce permitting charges for some species licences.
Proposed changes to our charges
Our consultation set out proposals to make changes to how much we charge for applications for new and amended permits, for the following charging schemes:
- industry regulation
- site based waste
- water quality
- water resources
- reservoir compliance
Approach to our review of regulatory charges
We want to make sure we apply the right charges in the right places and in a fair and appropriate manner. This will allow us to carry out our regulatory work while ensuring our guiding principles of Managing Welsh Public Money and deliver our corporate plan.
To ensure that all those affected by the review have their views heard, we engaged with our Chargepayers’ Consultative Group (CCG), made up of representatives of various sectors which may be impacted by any potential changes to our charging structure.
