Forest operations to fell and thin diseased larch trees in Fforest Fawr
Forest operations to fell and thin diseased larch trees in Fforest Fawr, Tongwynlais on the outskirts of Cardiff, will begin on Monday 27 September 2021.
We carried out the first phase of operations in 2018. We now have a contractor in place, Tillhill, to start phase 2 of the operation to remove the remaining larch trees. We are aiming to complete these works by March 2022.
The larch trees that are felled will be stored next to the forest road and then moved from the site by lorries.
The work areas will be managed to ensure the safety of the workers and the public and we will need to close a large part of the forest including many of the walking trails.
The trails impacted will be:
- Waymarked walking trails Burges' Way, Sir Henry's Trail, Three Bears Cave Trail, and the Industrial Heritage Trail.
- Sculpture Trail.
- Waymarked horse-riding routes
- Sustrans cycle route (Taff Trail) on the old forest road running along the western boundary of the forest.
Please follow any closure or diversion signs. Other areas within the forest will still be open for people to use.
The Fforest Fawr car park will remain open whilst the works take place, however, fencing will be erected to ensure the forest barrier doesn’t get blocked by parked vehicles.
