Iconic Wales Coast Path celebrates its fifth birthday!
The iconic Wales Coast Path, the world’s first uninterrupted route along a national coast, celebrates its fifth birthday today (5 May, 2017).
The 870-mile path is managed by Natural Resources Wales and walkers on the Welsh coast spent £84.7 million in 2014, supporting a 1,000 jobs.
In addition 43.4 million day visits to the Welsh coast included walking as an activity. This ranged from local people taking a short beach stroll to visitors completing the entire 870 mile long Wales Coast Path over 100 or more days.
Emyr Roberts, Chief Executive of Natural Resources Wales, said:
“The Wales Coast Path makes the most of the fantastic natural resource we look after and is a great example of how the environment can help many different parts of society.
“It boosts our rural and urban economies through tourism, improves health and wellbeing by getting people out walking, and connects people to the fantastic nature that lives along our magnificent coastline.
“The first five years have given us a great start, and there is a lot more that we can do. During the next years we’ll be working hard to try and get even more people to take advantage of this wonderful natural resource.”
NRW works in partnership with 16 coastal local authorities, two National Parks, Visit Wales and the many landowners along the route to manage, maintain and promote the path, with funding from the Welsh Government.
Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths added:
“In 2012 Wales blazed a trail when it became the first country in the world to have a dedicated path running the entire length of its coastline. Since then, the Wales Coast Path has provided numerous environmental, health and economic benefits for countless walkers.
“I have enjoyed discovering sections of it myself, most recently when I walked the Anglesey Coastal Path over the New Year holiday and I look forward to walking further sections in the future. As we celebrate its fifth birthday, I am sure the Wales Coast Path will, in the years to come, continue to be highly popular with local communities and visitors alike”
The Wales Coast Path offers something for everyone - from those gentle seaside strolls with young families to the dramatic and awe inspiring cliff top walks, whatever peaks your curiosity.
