Flood defence exercise being held at Abergwili road
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) will be carrying out a flood defence exercise on Sunday the 3rd of December at Abergwili road, Carmarthen to test the contingency flood defences that protect 147 properties in the village.
The road will be closed from 11am and will stay closed for up to four hours while the exercise is carried out.
This exercise will provide NRW with a way to test the area’s secondary flood defence plans so that they’re better prepared if the main defences fail.
This includes new demountable flood defences that can be put up quickly in the event of a flood.
Simone Eade, Senior Advisor of Flood Incident Management for NRW, said:
“Flooding can devastate homes and businesses alike which is why defending against them is one of our top priorities.
“While we put a lot of resources into flood defence we have to be prepared if they ever fail. This exercise will give us a good test run of those preparations.
“We hope people will see the benefit of us carrying out exercises like this and we apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
This exercise is a part of NRW’s Business Continuity plans and is required under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.
