Life of a Cyfoeth IT apprentice

We’re currently looking for our latest group of Cyfoeth IT Apprentices. This will be the third group to join our busy IT team.

In our latest blog Owen and Dee, two of our current IT Apprentices at Natural Resources Wales, answer a few questions about their life as an apprentice at Natural Rescues Wales.

Owen and Dee

How have you benefited from the Cyfoeth apprenticeship scheme?

Owen: The apprenticeship scheme has helped me gain a Microsoft certification within six months of joining Natural Resources Wales.

I always had an idea I’d go into ICT from early on but since joining the scheme I now have a clearer idea of my career path.

I am confident that the skills I now have can be used elsewhere and I feel I have gained confidence, especially with my customer care and writing skills.

It has given me the experience of working within an office environment.

I am still working towards becoming an IT engineer and hope that at the end of apprenticeship I will realise my ambition.

What advice would give someone who is considering applying for an apprenticeship?

Owen:I would say to go for an apprenticeship.

From around 16 years old I decided to down the apprenticeship route. I never really wanted to go to university as I saw it as a debt on myself and my family.

I have never regretted my decision and am pleased to have been able to gain industry qualifications, a salary and a job at the end of my training.

How have you benefited from the Cyfoeth apprenticeship scheme?

Dee: Joining the apprenticeship scheme has offered me many opportunities to learn new skills. I have been fortunate to study and gain ICT qualifications as well as the invaluable reward of working with some very skilled people - an education in itself.

I am inspired to work in ICT as I am really enjoying working in the role I have been placed in, I hope to continue with this type of role as I am finding it suits my interests.

What advice would give someone who is considering applying for an apprenticeship?

Dee: I would advise them to go for it, I personally think it’s the best thing I have done in my career. I have learnt so much in such a short space of time thanks to working on the job and working with such a talented team of people.

Our application window for the latest round of apprentices will close on Friday 26 August.
