As an organisation we support flexible working. This role allows hybrid working (a mix of home and office working) and a working pattern suitable for you can be discussed on appointment if you are successful.

You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home, of which you will be required to attend for regular meetings, training and for one-to-one meetings with your manager. These will be planned in advance.

Job description

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is the principal adviser to Welsh Government on issues relating to the environment and its natural resources. We aim to underpin all our advice and actions with robust evidence. In addition to making use of evidence generated by others, NRW itself gathers evidence, notably through the environmental monitoring we carry out.

Monitoring Analysis Team was formed to make more use of the data we collect through our monitoring programmes as well as to support the use of evidence from remote sensing (satellite imagery, drones, etc). You will work as part of an enthusiastic team that includes environmental data analysts, data managers and remote sensing specialists.

We are looking for someone to support our remote sensing activities. This is a good opportunity to gain experience in an expanding and innovative area of NRW’s work. Depending on your skills, you will have the opportunity to contribute directly to analytical work or to support other aspects of the team’s work (such as the development of guidance or intranet material).

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include:

Analyse, interpret and synthesise data and evidence drawing on information and data from a range of sources.
Prepare technical documents to inform the development of monitoring strategy and networks, and to contribute to statutory reporting obligations.
Project manage small technical projects across a range of environmental themes and involving colleagues from across the organisation.
Validate key data sets to ensure that the quality of NRW’s data is fit for its intended use.
Support engagement with partners working on monitoring and reporting work at Wales and UK levels.

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

Knowledge and experience of the following:

You will have strong analytical skills that enable you to process, analyse and interpret large amounts of technical information.
You will have good problem-solving skills, with the ability to extract and present key information to a range of audiences in both written and oral forms.
You will have experience of working in a programme and project management environment.
You will be a good communicator.

Welsh language requirements

Essential Level 1 – able to pronounce Welsh and use basic phrases

Evaluation of Information	Ability to interpret and understand a range of information including technical data, extracting key points and principles to provide the building blocks for the development of internal policies, strategy and plans. Documents produced will contain technical/ specialist information, requiring some original thought, creativity and understanding of the issues. Able to process and analyse non-routine information with an element of complexity and of a technical nature. Demonstrates an understanding of legislation and able to interpret and apply it, in relation to their role.
Impact	Has an appreciation that the work undertaken is generally within a discrete area and its impact primarily affects the direct environment, but it may also extend across other subjects and work areas and has the potential, if carried out incorrectly, to impact third parties and a wider area. The impact of decisions or work activities will typically be relatively short to medium term.
Communication and Relationships with Others	Ability to interact and communicate with people across a range of functions within NRW and externally, requiring the post holder to communicate around their area of expertise, adapting their approach and style appropriately. Demonstrates well established inter-personal and communication skills with an ability to develop, influence and sustain good working relationships.
